Pre-move furniture preparation checklist

A simple plan before the move saves time and protects your pieces. This is a practical checklist from a week before the move to after unloading.

One week before the move

Get rid of what you do not needA move is a chance to reduce old or unused pieces, which lowers the volume and the time.

Measure the doors and the stairsMeasure the width of your apartment door and staircase and the elevator's dimensions, and compare them with your largest piece (a sofa, a wardrobe, a bed).

Photograph the important piecesPhotograph valuable furniture and appliances before loading, which makes it easier to review their condition at delivery.

Book the date and servicesAgree the date and whether you need wrapping, dismantling and assembly or a crane, so the team prepares the equipment.

One or two days before the move

Number the boxesWrite on each box the room it is for and its general contents, which makes arranging it at the new place easier.

Empty the appliancesEmpty the fridge and freezer and disconnect them well in advance of the move, and drain the water from the washing machine.

Prepare the entrancesCoordinate with the doorman or the building or compound management about where the truck parks, use of the elevator and any permit required.

Keep an essentials bagPut important papers, valuables, medicines and chargers in a bag you carry with you.

Moving day and after
