Decluttering Before a Move

Every item you move gets loaded, unloaded and arranged, so sorting before the move saves effort and cuts the boxes and space you need.

Why sort before moving?

The size of the load is one of the factors that affect the number of trucks, the workers and the working time, so every item you get rid of before the date makes the calculation and the effort lighter. It is also a chance to start the new home with things you actually use. See what determines the moving price.

The four-pile sorting rule

Open one room at a time and divide its contents into: move it, sell it, donate it, throw it away. Ask yourself about each item: have I used it in the last year? Does it fit the new home in size and place? Is the cost of moving and storing it worth its value?

Start with the forgotten places

Start with the places where things pile up unused: the balcony, the storeroom, the tops of wardrobes and under the beds. Then the kitchen (duplicate or missing tools), clothes, books and papers. Old broken things waiting to be repaired year after year are usually never repaired.

Furniture and appliances: a bigger decision

Before moving a large piece, compare moving it with buying a suitable replacement for the new home, especially if it will not fit through the door or the elevator or does not suit the space. Measure the piece and the entrances first, and if you need time to decide you can put it temporarily in secure storage.

What to do with what you are not moving?

Items in good condition can be sold through local selling groups or donated to family, neighbors and charities, contacting them well before the date. Damaged items should be disposed of in coordination with the sanitation authorities in your area, and not left in the street or at the building entrance.

After sorting: prepare what is left

Once what you are moving is settled, it is easier to wrap it, number the boxes and arrange them by room. Follow the pre-move checklist and the furniture packing guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does sorting reduce the moving cost?

We do not give a fixed percentage because the cost depends on the volume of furniture, the distance, the floors and the dismantling and assembly services, but fewer items lighten the load and the time. Send us the list and photos and we will estimate the price.

Should I sort before or after setting the moving date?

It is best before the inspection or quote, so the estimate is based on what you will actually move.

Can I store the items I have not decided about?

Yes, they can be placed in secure storage until you decide. Contact us to settle the details.
