Moving Computers, TVs and Routers: How to Protect Your Devices and Prepare the Internet for the New Home
Electronics do not need much weight to get damaged; a knock, some humidity or a missing cable is enough. With a few simple steps your devices arrive intact and work from day one.
Start with a backup
Before dismantling any device, copy your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Computers and hard drives can be affected by vibration, and a backup protects you from the worst case. Keep the external drive with you rather than in the truck, as in the guide to documents and valuables.
Photograph the connections before unplugging
- Take a photo of the back connections of the TV, computer, router and receiver before you disconnect any cable.
- Put a colored sticker or a small note on each cable and on its matching port.
- Gather each cable with its device in a small bag labeled with the device name, and do not put them all in one box.
- Keep chargers and remotes with the device itself or in your personal bag.
Screens and TVs
- Use the device’s original box if you have it; it is the best packaging.
- If you cannot find it, wrap the screen in soft wrap, then bubble wrap, then a rigid box, and do not put pressure on it.
- Move the screen upright, not flat, and do not place anything on it.
- Do not hold the screen by the middle; hold it by the lower and side edges.
- For wall-mounted TVs, remove the bracket with its screws and keep them in a bag taped to the back of the device.
Computers and game consoles
Unplug the cables and shut the device down completely before dismantling it, and remove discs from devices that take them. Wrap the computer case in soft wrap and a box that stops it moving inside, and if you have a laptop, carry it yourself. For other appliances like the AC and the washing machine read moving AC units, water heaters, fridges and washing machines.
The router and internet before the move
- Call your internet provider well before the move to ask about transferring the line or installing a new one and how long that takes.
- Ask whether the old router moves with you or is handed back, as this differs between providers.
- If you work from home, keep a backup plan for the first days, such as a mobile data plan.
- Keep the Wi-Fi password and subscription details somewhere visible.
In the new home
Start by installing the router and the most important device, and do not switch a device on right away if it was exposed to cold or humidity; leave it an hour at room temperature first. Go back to the connection photos to put each cable back in place. For general arrangement see preparing the new apartment before the furniture arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Should I move the hard drive and computer in the truck with the furniture?
It is best to carry the hard drive and any important device yourself. Screens and computer cases can be moved in a closed truck after wrapping them well.
Do I need to wrap the TV in its original box?
That is best if you have it. Otherwise bubble wrap and a rigid box are enough, and we can wrap it for you as part of the packing service.
What if I lose a cable or a remote?
Gathering each accessory in a bag labeled with the device name reduces that a lot. If something goes missing, check the inventory the same day.
