Moving Plants and Balcony and Garden Furniture: How Do You Move Them Without Damage?

Houseplants and garden furniture are the first to suffer from heat and vibration. With a little care they arrive green and intact, and outdoor furniture moves without scratches or rust.

Plants: prepare them days before the move

  • Water them a day or two before the move, not on the morning of the move, so the soil is not wet and does not spill.
  • Trim extra leaves and long branches so they take less space and are easier to wrap.
  • Move the plant in its light plastic pot if possible; it is lighter and breaks less than clay.
  • For valuable or rare plants, ask a specialized nursery about the best way to move them.

How do you wrap plants?

  • Put the pot in a box that fits it, and fill the gaps with paper to stop movement.
  • Gently tie the branches with soft string so they stay together.
  • Put some paper or cloth over the soil so it stays in place.
  • Leave plants open at the top so air reaches them, and mark the box “Plant: this side up”.
  • Move them in moderate temperature where possible, and avoid leaving them long in a closed hot vehicle.

Planters and pottery

Pottery and ceramic are heavy and breakable, so large ones are emptied of soil before the move and wrapped in bubble wrap. For very large planters, plan ahead as you would for heavy items. For loading fragile pieces in general see moving mirrors, glass and ornaments.

Balcony and garden furniture

  • Clean the furniture and dry it well before wrapping so moisture is not trapped and mold does not form.
  • Dismantle removable parts like table legs and umbrellas, and keep their screws in a bag labeled with the name.
  • Wrap painted iron and wood in soft wrap to prevent scratches.
  • Outdoor cushions and fabrics are cleaned, dried and wrapped in plastic.
  • For a grill: disconnect the gas completely, and wait for it to cool and clean it before moving it.

Villas and gardens

In villas there are many floors, entrances and outdoor areas, so write a list of what is in the garden, on the roof and on the balconies before the move so everything is in the plan. For general organization read moving furniture in multi-floor villas.

In the new place

Choose a spot for the plants that suits their light needs, and leave them a few days to adjust before fertilizing or repotting. Do not put them in direct sun right away. Reassemble outdoor furniture after making sure the place is dry. If the move is in heat or rain, see moving furniture and the weather.

Frequently asked questions

Do you move plants in the furniture truck?

Well-wrapped plants can be moved with the furniture in a closed truck, and for your valuable plants it is best to carry them yourself if possible.

Do plants die from moving?

Most tolerate a move if they are not exposed to extreme heat, vibration or a long delay. Preparing before the move, wrapping properly and getting them indoors quickly all reduce the risk.

Do I need to wrap garden furniture?

Yes, wrapping protects it from scratches, and dismantling its parts makes loading easier and takes less space.
