Moving Rugs, Curtains and Mattresses

Furnishings get dirty and misshapen easily during a move, and proper preparation protects them and makes laying them out in the new home faster.

Clean and dry first

Wash or clean rugs and curtains before the move if possible, and let them dry completely. Wrapping damp fabric can cause a smell or mold, especially if it will stay in boxes or bags for several days. You can use the cleaning service before or after the move.

Rugs and carpets

Rugs are rolled on themselves rather than folded, because folding can leave lines that are hard to remove. Tie them with rope or tape in more than one place, then cover with plastic or stretch film to protect them from dust and water. Heavy or large rugs are carried by two people and laid flat, with nothing heavy placed on top.

Curtains and furnishings

Take curtains down with their tape or rings, and try folding them after washing and ironing rather than leaving creases. Expensive or delicate curtains are hung on hangers inside a cover or put in a wide box. Write on each bag the room name and the window size.

Mattresses and beds

Wrap the mattress in thick plastic or a dedicated bag and seal it with tape to protect it from dirt and water, and do not fold it hard unless it is a type that tolerates that. The mattress is moved upright or flat depending on its size, and no heavy furniture is put on it. Dismantling and assembling the bed is handled by the dismantling and assembly service.

Loading and arranging in the truck

Wrapped furnishings go on top of hard pieces or away from sharp parts and screws, and away from anything that might leak or stain. On the first day in the new home, prepare first: mattresses and bedding, then curtains in the bedrooms to ensure privacy.

Before you lay things out

Open the bags and let them air for a while, and make sure the floor is clean before laying rugs. For more see preparing the new home before the furniture arrives.
